Soroban teaching follows a level system inspired by Japanese tradition that helps measure progress and motivate the learner.

Kyu grades

These are the beginner-to-intermediate levels, numbered in descending order (for example 10 Kyu, then 9 Kyu… down to 1 Kyu); the smaller the number, the higher the level.

Dan grades

These are the advanced levels, numbered in ascending order (1 Dan, 2 Dan…); they require high speed and accuracy and often anzan skills.

What do the exams include?

  • Timed addition and subtraction.
  • Multi-digit multiplication and division.
  • At higher levels: mental calculation (anzan).

How to progress?

Consistency and timed practice are the key. Train your speed in practice and raise the level gradually from easy to hard.
