If you are starting from zero, this guide lays out the steps to learn the soroban in a logical, gradual way.

1) Representing numbers

First learn how to represent the numbers 0 to 9 on a single column, then multi-digit numbers. Start with the basics lesson.

2) Addition and subtraction

Master direct addition, then the "five-complement" and "ten-complement", followed by subtraction and borrowing. This is the most important stage for building speed.

3) Multiplication and division

After mastering addition and subtraction, move on to multiplication and division; both rely on knowing the times table.

4) Regular practice

  • Practice 10–15 minutes daily instead of long, infrequent sessions.
  • Use the quizzes to measure your progress.
  • Raise the level gradually from easy to hard.

Remember that mastery comes from repetition; consistency matters more than duration.
